About Lucy

Education and Early Career

Lucy’s conservation career began with a degree at the City & Guilds of London Art School, where she focused on the conservation of carving and gilding.

This training grounded her in the techniques of the 18th-century masters, emphasising the virtuosity of original craftsmen rather than merely replicating their work.

In 2002, she joined the prestigious London-based workshop Carvers & Gilders, a firm founded in 1979 by art school graduates that built a global reputation for excellence in the field.

Artistry and Specialisations

Lucy is a master of multiple disciplines, working across both wood and stone. Her expertise includes:

Versatility: While her work is primarily rooted in the 18th-century style, she also can be commissioned to create modern ornamental designs and letter cutting in wood and stone for memorials and plaques.

Ornamental Carving: Recreating complex, missing ornaments for antique furniture and architectural details.

Gilding and Conservation: Restoring gilded surfaces using traditional gesso preparation, modelling, and water gilding.

Historical Accuracy: She is skilled in “cut-gesso,” a technique involving fine-detail carving directly into the gesso layer before gilding.
